Meet the Candidates (Pt.2) Kyrsten Sinema

We leave the rolling hills of New York and head west to the arid land of desert, cacti, and hideous beasts like Sheriff Joe and Jan "One Face Lift Too Many" Brewer.  We step out of the car (who needs a plane?  Getting there is half the fun) and find ourselves in AZ-09, the newly formed 9th Congressional District in Arizona, which includes the City of Tempe and parts of Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Chandler, Mesa and a few neighborhoods in Phoenix.  We arrive at our hotel, flip on the TV and find ourselves up to our necks in attack ads from out of town Super Pacs blasting Democratic Candidate Kyrsten Sinema.  Never one's to take a Super Pac attack ad at face value (we're smarter than that), we decide to take a closer look at the candidate and the race for AZ-09.
Kyrsten Sinema, Democratic Nominee for AZ-09

Kyrsten Sinema is a jack of all trades and has mastered them all.  She is an educator, social worker, criminal defense attorney and former state legislator (in both the AZ House and Senate).  She was named to Time Magazine's "40 Under 40".  The thing Kyrsten is best known for is her ability to reach across the aisle and find consensus with people that hold vastly different ideas.  She's a natural leader that knows the fine art of compromise through and through.  Some people are just talented at bringing diverse people and ideas together and making them work.  Kyrsten is one of those people.  And it's no wonder the Republicans are so determined to keep her from representing the people of Arizona's 9th District.  Jan Brewer's personal PAC has donated more than $23,000 to help keep Kyrsten out of office.  Let's face it, we all know that Brewer despises anyone who builds bridges and consensus.  Sinema doesn't look at the people in the opposition party as the enemy--unlike Brewer, who looks at anyone who disagrees with her as criminal.

Kyrsten has fresh ideas on the issues that matter to the people in her district, especially the local hot button issue of immigration.  In her campaign website, Kyrsten uses one word that stands out...inhumane.  Just think about that word for a second...inhumane.  It's easy to look at a group of people as an abstract and to refer to them in broad generalizations and pass judgment on a group without really looking at the underlying issues.  Many of the people who come to this country illegally do so because they live their lives under the threat of drug cartels who are pathologically violent.  They want a chance to live a life without the threat of being killed.  They want a better chance for their kids.  What parent doesn't want that?  We here in the United States tell our kids that we'd go to the ends of the Earth for them.  This group of people actually do what we only speak about.  They're willing to risk living a life in the shadow of deportation and separation.  It's a huge gamble.  I'm sorry, but compassion has to come into play on this issue, and circumstances do indeed alter cases.  We must look at these people as fellow human beings and treat them as such.

Sinema supports the DREAM ACT, which gives people brought to this country through no choice of their own, a path to citizenship.  This is not just doing these people a favor, mind you--it is a win-win situation.  In return, we get bright, educated minds to join our workforce, we increase our diversity, which has always been the strength of this nation.  And most importantly--we avoid being inhumane.  Sending these human beings back to a country they have never known is flat-out inhumane.  Splitting apart families and putting children with loving parents into the foster care system because the parents are here illegally and are being deported is inhumane.  Sinema proposes a plan that allows undocumented workers to "get right" with the government by paying back taxes, paying a fine and learning English as a requirement for citizenship.  She also agrees that we must secure our borders in Arizona so that we may more effectively deal with drug cartels and human trafficking.  Sinema's plan allows us to save the millions of dollars it would cost tax payers to institute mass deportation and allows us to preserve our humanity as well as our reputation around the world as a refuge for those in need.  Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.  I lift my lamp beside the golden door... this is who we are as Americans.

Kyrsten Sinema is also looking to the future of Arizona's 9th District by advocating educational reform.  Sinema knows that the only way to compete with countries like India and China is by improving the public education system in the US and by making early childhood education a priority.  She stresses the need to stop cutting education funding and to discontinue unfunded mandates in education.  Hiring more teachers, reducing class sizes and making higher education affordable and available to everyone--whether it be college, technical school, or job training-- these are all part of Sinema's philosophy for improving opportunities for people and making our nation more competitive in the global market.

Kyrsten also sees the value in tapping our most valuable natural resource--solar power, in Arizona.  She is an advocate for careful community planning and increased availability of public transportation.  She believes in increased fuel economy standards for cars made in America, which would make our auto industry more competitive globally and would save American families a substantial amount on gas annually.

Kyrsten Sinema is a bright, articulate leader, with a natural ability to work with people with differing points of view.  That's a pretty rare quality in Congress today.  We need more people with that kind of positive attitude representing Americans across the country.  We are a great and diverse people, with different opinions and different ideas.  When we work together, we are at our best.  I encourage you to cast your ballot on November 6th for Kyrsten Sinema in the 9th District of Arizona.  She's that good.  Just look at how much Jan Brewer hates her.  That should tell you something.  Check out Kyrsten Sinema's ideas here.
