We're less than a month away from the election, and the smell of Republican desperation is in the air. In an election cycle where Republicans nominated the lesser of the evils from a group of un-electable extremists, the party loud mouths are starting to see how unlikely they are to pull off a victory in November. It's not just the pundits that see this. Money that was once flowing like wine into the Romney campaign effort is now being diverted into down ticket races, in the hopes that the party can take the Senate and maintain control of the House. Despite the lack of faith of the monied set, the Republicans haven't given up on the Presidency just yet. Their "by any means necessary" mindset prevails.
Voter supression has been in the news a lot lately. It seems that the Republicans are obsessed with the integrity of the election. You would think that the idea of a fair election was of the utmost importance to the GOP--and you couldn't be more wrong about that. Which brings us to Thursday night in Asheville, NC, where Mike Huckabee suggested to the crowd that there was a way to snatch victory for Romney from the jaws of defeat. All they had to do, Huckabee stated, was keep Obama supporters away from the polls. He suggested they do that by telling Obama supporters that the election had been postponed until December and if all else failed; letting the air out of their tires.
This kind of thug mentality is nothing new for Huckabee, who suggested the very same tactics last year in Ohio over the referendum on Ohio's organized labor collective bargaining rights. The GOP is still bathing in tomato juice to rid itself of the stench of Strategic Allied Consulting in Florida. If your memory needs refreshing, SAC is run by long time Republican minion Nathan Sproul and was caught turning in falsified, ineligible and incorrect voter registration forms to elections boards in ten Florida counties. The party is still wiping egg off its face from the young lady in Colorado who was registering "only Romney voters" and was found to have ties to SAC as well--and is there anyone left who really believes that True the Vote is anything more than a coordinated tea-bagger effort to intimidate voters and waste valuable resources of local election boards by challenging thousands of voter registrations unnecessarily?
It comes down to this. How far are the actual voting members of the Republican party, those average Americans who are conservative, willing to go to put their party in power? We already know that the leadership of the GOP will stop at nothing, but what value does Republican America place on fair elections? And you, Tea Partiers? You claim to hold our Constitution so dear, what lines are you willing to cross to put your candidates in office?
Back in April, House Republican Allen West took a lot of flack for calling members of the House Progressive Caucus communists. West refused to back down from his statement, saying:
" There is a very thin line between communism, progressivism, Marxism, Socialism...it's about nationalizing production, it's about creating and expanding the welfare state. It's about this idea of social and economic justice."
I'll go West (a Tea Party darling) one further. It's also about the right of all the people to choose their leadership. All of us, Mr. West and Mr. Huckabee. We amended the Constitution until we got it right. Every person in this country, age 18 and over are allowed to cast a ballot. Regardless of skin color, property ownership, gender, or political affiliation. To deny people the right to cast that ballot is none other than....COMMUNISM. It's one of the hallmarks of that particular governmental and societal construct. So, I'm going to say right here, right now, for all of you to see and to share: Mike Huckabee, and the leadership of the Republican party who advocate lying to supporters of the opposition party about the election date. Those who advocate vandalism to prevent people from going to the polls, those who engage in voter suppression and intimidation of any kind that prevents a group of voters from that most sacred of civil rights...You are a communist.
And you voting members of the Republican party, the ordinary men and women of this country; if you support these tactics or if you support candidates who advocate these tactics, there is blood on your hands as well. You're just as much as communist as they are. You either believe in Democracy all the time for all of the people, whether they agree with you or not...or you're a communist. Think about that. Fair elections are the foundation of this country and it will take pressure from within the Republican party to stop the madness.
